Say No

If you’re not saying no to good things, you’re probably not saying no enough. With the increasing access we have to each other, we have to make sure we’re saying no frequently. I personally try to starve my schedule because whenever I feed it, it seems to only grow plumper—needing more and more food the next week and the week after.

For the past few years, I’ve placed a ruthlessly high value on space and margin. I fight for it relentlessly, which takes an enormous amount of work. I find it weird that people admire others who are extra busy. But honestly, can’t everyone do that? Last time I checked, it’s easy to fill an entire week. I’m more interested in people who schedule as little as possible, only what is essential and best for their flourishing. That takes work. And commitment. Focus. Vision. That’s countercultural to the hustle.

Now, some people can make this decision cerebrally and just move on with their lives all prioritized and organized and healthy. That wasn’t the case for Alyssa and me.

We had to learn from the great teacher Burnout.

And first spend some time with Master Overwhelm.

We were doing things that seemed great and awesome (which is what hurry feeds on best), but we ended the week feeling unfulfilled. Burned out and a little more on edge. Depleted and wound up.

Even before I was married and had kids, my travel schedule was a problem. I’d be boarding planes every other week, constantly getting up at 3:00 a.m. for morning flights, getting home at midnight a few days later, then rushing to a morning coffee meeting after a few hours of sleep. Or I’d take a red-eye flight, land in the morning, and have to shower and shave at the airport before hopping on a stage a few hours later. My craziest time was when I flew from Seattle (where I lived at the time) to Florida for a speaking trip, then back to Seattle, but because I had to board another flight a few hours later for another unrelated event, I decided to not even leave the SeaTac airport. I just grabbed a bite to eat and hopped back on my next flight to Missouri, which I probably flew over while flying back to Seattle earlier that day. (Let’s just say I’ve also gotten better at routing flights based on certain locations since then!) I was flying across the world to speak about God and tell people about Jesus and share stories of his healing power and hope and resurrection. Truly life-giving and fulfilling and meaningful work—if only I could have been awake enough to remember it.

After Alyssa and I had children, we faced enormous pressure to do what we thought we were supposed to do. We thought we needed to schedule play dates, because our kids need to socialize. We needed to get them in fun activities because, wouldn’t they die from boredom if we didn’t? We thought we needed to have a family
